well, when it comes to the magical girl genre, i'd have to say that my favourites are revolutionary girl utena, magical angel creamy mami, madoka magica, and princess tutu.
creamy mami is pretty silly and is mostly aimed at children, but utena, madoka magica, and princess tutu all manage to incorporate dark themes and mature imagery - which i'm a big fan of. ^^
most people have already seen madoka magica, but if you haven't i'd start off with that (only 12 episodes!). it's a good re-introduction to the genre, since it's so short! :D
if you've seen madoka, then next i'd definitely recommend princess tutu. it's phenomenal.
